Man United star suffers injury blow, withdraws from England squad

Marcus Rashford has been forced to withdraw from the England squad as the Manchester United star attempts to recover from his ankle injury for the start of the new Premier League season.

Rashford suffered an ankle problem last season, but reportedly opted to play through the pain to help secure Champions League qualification for United.

The 22-year-old had initially been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming Uefa Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark in September.

However, Rashford has now withdrawn from the Three Lions squad as he attempts to regain full fitness with the 2020/21 Premier League season kicking off on September 12.

Following the announcement of his withdrawal, Rashford tweeted: “Gutted… never want to let this team down but these fixtures just came a little too soon for me.

“I tried my best but I have to focus on starting the season at my strongest for club and country.

“Good luck boys, I’ll be cheering you on from home @England”.

Rashford’s absence means Jack Grealish has been called up to the England squad for the first time in his career.
