Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial scored as Manchester United recorded a much-needed, if unconvincing, victory over Everton.

United were looking to bounce back after being outclassed by Juventus in the Champions League in midweek and Pogba eased any tension at Old Trafford by converting the rebound after his 27th-minute penalty had been saved.

Pogba then turned provider four minutes after the interval for Anthony Martial to curl in a wonderful effort from the edge of the area.

It was far from a compelling display from the hosts, though, and Everton were gifted a lifeline through Gylfi Sigurdsson’s spot-kick after 77 minutes, but United held on to move above the Toffees and up to eighth in the Premier League table.
