Man Utd fans vent their anger on Solskjaer for not starting Sancho

Manchester United fans have taken to social media to vent their frustration over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to leave Jadon Sancho on the bench against Southampton.

The Norwegian manager is yet to give his £73million summer signing a place in the Manchester United starting XI as he is said to be exercising caution with his latest arrivals.

As a result, Sancho – who came off the bench last week in the Red Devils’ 5-1 win against rivals Leeds United – will be joined on the sidelines by Raphael Varane following his move from Real Madrid.

Romelu Lukaku believes his return to Chelsea is the ‘chance of a lifetime’.

However, fans are frustrated with the decision to start Sancho on the bench after the 21-year-old managed an hour of football against Burnley on Tuesday.

Many do, however, understand the decision start Varane on the bench – given he has not played yet this summer.

Speaking ahead of the game on Sunday afternoon, Solskjaer said that the decision came down to the player’s fitness.

He told reporters: ‘Both of them are getting there. They still lack a bit of fitness, if they are needed they will come on.’

Fans were quick to respond to the manager’s comments, with one Tweeting: ‘I love Ole but I do wish he’d just throw new signings in the deep end. Varane and Sancho have played big games. They can figure it out without easing them in. I’m certain a rusty Varane is better than Lindelof. #MUFC’.

Another added: ‘I can understand Raphael Varane not starting because he’s had no competitive minutes since the 28th of June but I cannot see any reason why Jadon Sancho wouldn’t waltz into the starting lineup.’

While others simply questioned Solskjaer’s thought process saying: ‘Why on Gods green earth are Varane and Sancho on the bench?’ and ‘Can anyone explain why Sancho isn’t starting? Makes no sense to me.’

Some have taken to social media to share hilarious memes referencing Donny van de Beek – who has become a regular bench warmer.

Former Liverpool defender Graeme Souness is not phased by the decision to leave Sancho on the bench after questioning whether or not Manchester United needed to sign him.

He believes Mason Greenwood – who scored in last weekend’s 5-1 win over Leeds – operates well on the right-wing and that he is more than capable of making the position his own.

Souness did, however, say United’s decision to sign Varane was a good one as it adds ‘a lot of power’ to the squad.

Souness said: ‘I think they have a good squad of players and they’ve added a lot of power with Varane as well.

‘Jadon Sancho, I’m not sure they really need him. You’ve got Greenwood wide though he will play through the middle.

‘I think United will come very close this year, whether they are good enough I’m not sure. We wait and see. We’re making these statements after one game.’
