Man Utd request special dispensation from Premier League to give Ronaldo No7

Manchester United have requested special dispensation from the Premier League in order to hand Cristiano Ronaldo the no.7 shirt at Old Trafford this season.

The 36-year-old completed a sensational £12.8million return to the club on deadline day, returning to the club after a 12-year absence.

Ronaldo wore the famous no.7 shirt during his six-year stay at the Theatre of Dreams and he wore the same number in all but one of his nine seasons at Real Madrid, as legendary captain Raul occupied it when he first arrived in 2009.

Edinson Cavani is the current owner of the shirt but the no.21 shirt is available following Daniel James’ move to Leeds and the forward wears the same number for Uruguay.

Cavani would be willing to transition to the no.21 shirt in order to give his number to Ronaldo and the Times say United have applied for special dispensation in order to make the move possible.

Ronaldo hopes to make his debut against Newcastle United at Old Trafford after the international break.

United have accumulated seven points from their first three matches, beating Wolves and Leeds in between a draw against Southampton.

James was sold to Leeds for an initial fee of around £25m on deadline day after the Welshman was told his game time would be further limited following Ronaldo’s arrival.
