Man Utd shirt numbers available to Ronaldo with Cavani owning No7

After agreeing a stunning return to Manchester United, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will be forced to take one of the less recognisable shirt numbers.

Ronaldo had looked like he would be moving to Manchester City after telling Juventus that he no longer wanted to stay with the Serie A giants.

But while it was reported that the 36-year-old had agreed to personal terms with the reigning Premier League champions, United hijacked the deal.

The Red Devils are now welcoming Ronaldo back to Old Trafford as a United player for the first time since he left for Real Madrid in the summer of 2009.

With the move a done deal, attention will now turn to what United will look like with Ronaldo back in the team.

But before manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can begin to plan for Ronaldo being in his starting line-up, the Portugal captain will first need a shirt number.

When he first joined United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon, legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson handed him the iconic number seven shirt.

The attacker has since revealed his trepidation about taking the place of players such as David Beckham in United’s number seven.

“‘When I arrived at United, I asked for 28 but the coach said, ‘No, you will wear seven,’” he said.

“I was petrified as I knew Beckham wore that shirt. But I took on the challenge and since then it has been my lucky number. I have won everything in football with that shirt.”

For the start of his second spell though, the number seven shirt will not be an option as it is currently held by striker Edinson Cavani.

Cavani has been number seven for nine of the seasons he has played profession football and so will be unlikely to switch.
