Manchester United Star Mata Almost In £1m Debt

Spanish midfielder Juan Mata who plies his trade for Manchester United is finding life in the restaurant trade difficult to swallow – with his eatery close to £1 million in debt.

Mata and his family opened Tapeo & Wine in the city in 2016 after being unimpressed with the Spanish food on offer in the city.

But the latest accounts for the restaurant – which has been given rave reviews by diners for its food and wine – show it has huge debts.

Books filed to Companies House recently revealed it has total debts of £772,086 for 2018 – up from £593,548 in 2017.

The accounts showed it had £46,422 in cash and stock worth £14,697. The restaurant is run by Mata’s dad Juan Mata Rodriguez with cash from the midfielder.

A report into the firm’s trading revealed: “The company is dependent upon the financial support of JMM Rodriguez who has indicated that he will not withdraw this financial support in the foreseeable future.

“On this basis, the directors consider it appropriate to prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis.”

Would-be diners are told on the restaurant’s website: “Tapeo & Wine was born in 2016 on Deansgate, central Manchester.

“Created through the passion that our owners, the Mata family, have for gastronomy, and under the leadership of our Head Chef, Jesús Ara and his team, we mix tradition and innovation to make the most of our dishes with the aim of bringing Spain a little closer via your senses.”
