Moses leads Chelsea’s list of longest serving players

Former Super Eagles winger Victor Moses is now Chelsea’s longest-serving player after the departure of Brazilian forward Lucas Piazon this week.

The Blues are known for the amount of players in their ranks and the sheer number out on loan.

Currently, they’ve got 29 players on loan, including the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Michy Batshuayi and Ross Barkley.

They’ve got a history of keeping players under contract long-term only to continuously ship them out on loan deals.

And the same can be said for their former and current longest-serving players.

Piazon, who was their longest-serving player, had been at the club since 2012 but had only played once in the league.

Seven loan spells later, however, he finally departed for good, signing a permanent contract with Portuguese side Braga.

That leaves Moses as the club’s longest-serving player in their ranks, having been at Stamford Bridge since 2012.

He’s had six different loan spells, however, and is only under contract until the summer of 2022.

It seems he has little to no future at Chelsea, with his last game time coming under Maurizio Sarri.

He developed from a winger into a left wing-back under Antonio Conte, and his game time severely diminished after the Italian coach left.

Moses has been linked with a number of permanent moves away from Stamford Bridge, but instead has opted for loan moves

Cesar Azpilicueta is next on the list, having joined around the same time as Moses.

Marco Van Ginkel, who arrived at Chelsea the year after Azpilicueta and Moses, is one of the many players currently out on loan.

Jamal Blackman, who is yet to play for the Chelsea side despite having come through the academy, joined the first-team set-up in 2012 before having eight loan spells.

Moses joined Russian Premier League club Spartak Moscow on a season-long loan with an option to buy in October last year. Two days later on 17 October, he made his club debut from the bench in a 3–2 away win against Khimki.

On 24 October, he made his first appearance as a starter and scored his first goal for Spartak in a 3–1 away win against Krasnodar. At the home front Moses made 37 appearances for the Super Eagles from 2012 to 2018 with 12 goals to his credit.
