Mount hails ‘brave’ Chelsea after ‘massive win’ at Anfield

Mason Mount hailed a “massive win” for Chelsea over Liverpool as their “brave” approach earned a crucial three points in the race for the top four.

Mount scored the only goal of the game as the Blues triumphed 1-0 at Anfield on Thursday night, condemning Liverpool to a club record fifth straight home defeat.

The result lifts Chelsea back into the top four, a point ahead of fifth-placed Everton and two clear of West Ham in sixth, albeit having played a game more than both sides.

Crucially, it leaves Liverpool languishing in seventh, four points adrift of a Champions League spot.

“Where the season is at the moment it is very tight in the top four, we are in and around and we want to keep pushing,” Mount told Sky Sports. “We have been on a good run recently, we have been keeping clean sheets but not scoring enough. It was very good to score tonight.

“Massive win. Every game now is a big win, we need to get as many three points as we can. We have the team to do it, we want to keep going.”

The win continued manager Thomas Tuchel’s excellent start to life in the Chelsea dugout and the German got the better of countryman Jurgen Klopp as his side targeted Liverpool’s high line to great effect.

Timo Werner had already had an effort ruled out for the harshest of offside calls, beating the offside trap, before Mount himself capitalised on a long ball from N’Golo Kante to open the scoring.

“The game plan was to press them high and not let them have the ball,” Mount added. “We had to be brave and try and win the ball up high. Most of the time they defend high and that is where the goal came from.

“I just try to give my best performance wise if I am starting or coming off the bench. I feel like everyone has been really together. I am obviously happy, I am happy to get a goal today. I want to score more.”
