Mourinho: I cannot keep giving Ndombele more opportunities

Jose Mourinho has told Tanguy Ndombele he must improve after another lacklustre performance from Tottenham’s club-record signing.

The 23-year-old struggled to make an impression in Spurs’ central midfield and was hooked at the interval after an anonymous first-half display against Burnley.

Mourinho had some brutal advice for struggling Ndombele

Spurs made a remarkable improvement in the second half, with Ndombele’s replacement Giovani Lo Celso starring as one of the best players on the pitch and the Argentine played a part in the build-up to the penalty.

Ndombele, a £65 million arrival from Lyon in 2019, has been plagued by injury and has spent most of his time under Mourinho on the bench.

And the Portuguese tactician made it abundantly clear the France international must improve his level with a brutal assessment of his performance.

“I was expecting players who were not tired to give more to the team,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“Somebody has to realise this is the Premier League, this is a new experience and first time coming to Burnley. I hope next season he can be fantastic.”

When pressed about what Ndombele needs to do, Mourinho explained he hopes to see the best of the Spurs midfielder when he fully adapts to the Premier League.

“I hope he uses every minute on the pitch and every minute knowing what the Premier League is to improve,” he added.

“Many fantastic players in their first season in a new country for different reasons they struggle. There have been many examples of that.

“He’s a player with great talent. He has to know he has to do much better and know I cannot keep giving him opportunities to play because the team is much more important.”
