Mourinho predicted Liverpool’s title credentials to Kompany

Liverpool’s first title in 30 years has seemed almost inevitable since they beat rivals City 3-1 at Anfield back in November, and on Thursday they finally secured the title with another loss for City, this time against Chelsea.

Before the game at Anfield Jurgen Klopp’s side led by six points but, in the Sky Sports studio, Vincent Kompany was questioning if it was too early to say Liverpool could win the league, “In this case, if you look at the last decade or so, there have been numerous times where Liverpool were top of the league and there were numerous times where City were behind as well…” the Belgian said before he was interrupted.

Mid sentence Kompany was suddenly stopped by fellow pundit Mourinho, who was just 10 days away from getting the Spurs’ job, who argued Liverpool were ready to be champions.

“But City was the best team when I gave you the title, you never told me thank you. When I gave you the title by winning here and you didn’t even call me to say thank you, you were the best team,” Jose said in typical bullish fashion.

“They were not the best, they were there, they were almost there, but you were the best team, in this moment I don’t think there is that difference in power.

“Even in terms of statures, if statures play something. You are the champions of England but they are the champions of Europe.

“They know how to win, they know how to cope with the pressure, so for me, the game today is very, very important.

“Because if the distances are three points or six points, it is still very open, but if the difference is nine points, goodbye.”

Mourinho would go on to be proved right because Liverpool’s win took them nine points clear, and they would only go on to extend that lead throughout the season.

In the match Fabinho put Klopp’s side ahead after just six minutes but there was controversy as Trent Alexander-Arnold somehow wasn’t ruled to have handled the ball in his own area in the build up.

There was no questions as Mo Salah headed the Reds’ second goal just minutes later to give Pep Guardiola’s side an almighty uphill struggle.

Sadio Mane made it 3-0 after 51 minutes and Bernardo Silva’s goal with 12 minutes left was nothing more than a consolation goal.

Last season City handled the pressure as Liverpool kept one point behind the then defending champions but as Liverpool pulled away from this term Kompany’s former side couldn’t keep pace.

Mourinho was right all along.
