Mourinho Returns to Home League after Man Utd Sacking

While Manchester United were preparing for their first match under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho was back at his hometown club almost 1,000 miles away.

Mourinho was axed as United manager on Tuesday following a calamitous run of results which had seen them fall 19 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.

Solskjaer was swiftly appointed until the end of the season and on Saturday evening claimed his first win in a 5-1 demolition of Cardiff.

Mourinho, however, was back at Bonfim Stadium in Setubal to watch Vitoria de Setubal lose 2-0 to Santa Clara.

It is quite the change of scenery from last weekend, when a chastening defeat by Liverpool spelt the end of his reign at Old Trafford.

The 55-year-old, who hails from Setubal was warmly welcomed by the home crowd as he took in the Primeira Liga clash under the Portuguese sunshine.

Following United’s match at Cardiff, midfielder Paul Pogba took the opportunity to thank his former boss for bettering him as a person.

‘With Jose, we won trophies,’ Pogba said. ‘We worked. I want to thank him for that. Not everything went well, but things went well.

‘We won trophies. He made me improve, as a person as well. That’s it. That’s the past. I want to thank him for that. I’m sure all the players do.’
