Netherlands name new interim coach after Koeman’s exit

The Royal Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) have named Dwight Lodeweges as interim coach after Ronald Koeman joined Barcelona.

Lodeweges, has been assistant coach of the Netherlands since 2018, will be in charge of the team until the KNVB decide on Koeman’s successor.

“We regret Ronald’s decision, but we respect it,” said the KNVB director Eric Gudde in a statement released by the federation

“In the period in which Ronald was national team coach, he achieved very good results.

“With Koeman at the helm, the Netherlands qualified for the first time since 2014 for a final phase, EURO 2020, which was postponed until the summer next year due to the coronavirus crisis.

“Last year, the Oranje triumphed in the UEFA Nations League, in which memorable matches were played against France and Germany.”

Koeman had signed for Holland until 2022 but his contract had a clause that required the federation to negotiate his departure if the Catalan club took an interest in him.

“Everyone knows that Barcelona is the club of my dreams,” said Koeman in KNVB’s statement.

“For me it is very special to be able to become their coach.

“It has been an honour to be the national coach of the Netherlands.

“For the last two and a half years, I have done my best to achieve success with Oranje.

“I look back with pride at what we have achieved together in this period.
