Neville: Man Utd Treble winners no match for 2008 team

Manchester United Treble winner, Gary Neville,  has  admitted  they should’ve won more after their 1999 triumph.

During a three-season period from 1998-2001, United won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League – but didn’t secure more European honours during that stint.

In fact, it took United almost a decade to win the Champions League again, with an entirely new side under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I think that this team, in a single season, is the best achievement in Manchester United’s history. I’m not going to compare it to the [Arsenal] Invincibles, in our history, it’s the greatest single achievement to win the treble. But, that team then disappointed for two years after that in Europe,” he told Sky Sports.

“We won three leagues on the bounce but we never did back-to-back it in Europe and that is the big point of that team, that we didn’t go on and do it again and again.

“Obviously, Sir Alex Ferguson, he demanded and wanted dominance, and we wanted dominance as well, but we were beaten by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals the year after and we fell short, you’ve got to go and win it again.

“The greatest teams, you go and win it again, and you go and win it again. The 2008 team, I’ve always put that team above the team in 1999. I’ve watched all three great teams under Sir Alex Ferguson, I came into the team at the end of 94/95, saw the end of that team, I played in the 99 team and I played at the start of the 2006/7 team and saw the emergence of that team.

“I’ve always said that team, they had eight to nine world-class players, so I always placed that team above them. The 99 team was a great side but the 2008 team does eclipse it.”
