Neville’s verdict: Man Utd owners ‘caught out’ by Solskjaer’s sacking

Gary Neville believes Manchester United’s ‘indecisive’ owners have been ‘caught out’ by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking and things could get much worse before they get better.

Solskjaer was sacked by United on Sunday morning in the wake of a humiliating defeat at Watford which was their fifth defeat in seven Premier League matches during a torrid run.

With no permanent replacement ready to go, United have installed Michael Carrick in caretaker charge for the upcoming games against Villarreal and Chelsea, with Zinedine Zidane and Brendan Rodgers potential candidates to succeed Solskjaer.

Club legend Neville said United’s squad are ‘shot to pieces’ and fears they will get ‘battered’ against league leaders Chelsea next Sunday.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: ‘I don’t want to stick the knife into the owners but I’ve had enough of it.

‘The club is run OK business-wise but culturally, football-wise, it leaves a lot to be desired and they’ve been caught out.

‘They were indecisive – before the international break they should have made the change, if they were going to make it.

‘Getting to the end of the season was the right plan but it was clear the players weren’t responding to the manager. They didn’t dislike him but sometimes you just can’t deliver.

‘When the results are that bad, you end up going.’

The former United defender added: ‘I have no doubts every decision Ole has made in three years will have been for the best interests of Man United – he loves the club – but he couldn’t get his team out on the pitch to play football very well at all.

‘They were really poor. The players bring it on themselves which tells you about the lack of leaders and characters. We’ve seen it before, it will happen again. You see it coming.

‘You hope they can find a second wind but it never came. This was a horrific week, they’ve not got past first base. Watford have mauled them, messed them around and it spells the end.’

Solskjaer leaves his post at Old Trafford almost three years after coming in, initially on a temporary basis, after Jose Mourinho’s acrimonious sacking.

Despite huge outlay in the transfer market on players like Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, he wasn’t able to get a tune out of the team this season.

‘I always say managers deserve two, three years and Ole can’t complain,’ Neville added.

‘He was backed in the market. David Moyes got eight months. He will be massively disappointed about not being able to deliver performance, we all expected a lot more.

‘Only he and the players will understand what’s gone wrong. Why, after progressing last season and the season before, did they start falling apart in then last few weeks?

‘They don’t look like they’ve ever seen each other or passed the ball to each other.

‘You talk about having to integrate the squad. They’re shot to pieces and all over the place. He’ll be sad at the end but should be proud.

‘The club was in a dark place after Jose and now at least the players are good lads who aren’t performing. But they’ll get battered on live TV if they don’t sort themselves out for Chelsea.’
