Newcastle launch ambitious move for Idrissa Gueye

Newcastle made an ambitious bid to sign Idrissa Gana Gueye on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday night.

The former Everton midfielder will be allowed to leave but is unsure on the move.

Gueye joined the Paris giants from Everton in the summer of 2019 for £30million.

Under then-manager Thomas Tuchel, Gueye’s PSG career got off to a phenomenal start, with the club winning all of his first eight games without conceding a single goal.

But things have stagnated for the 31-year-old this season. Gueye has made 16 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG so far but completed 90 minutes just once since October.

He came on for just nine minutes in PSG’s shock 3-2 defeat to Lorient on Sunday.

Gueye is well-versed in the Premier League having been a mainstay in the first-team when he was at Everton. A favourite for his combative style and relentless running, the Senegalese international made 108 appearances for the Toffees.

Newcastle also remain keen on Arsenal’s Joe Willock also but a move for Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury looks to have fallen flat with Brendan Rodgers reluctant to let him leave.

Steve Bruce also attempted to sign Schalke defender Ozan Kabak on loan but the deal proved too expensive.
