NFF Awards: Iwobi battles Musa, Ighalo for Player of the Year

The Nigeria Football Federation on Sunday announced the nominees for the various awards up for grabs for this year’s Football Awards scheduled for the Eko Hotel and Suites today.

In the men’s category, Arsenal forward, Alex Iwobi will slug it out with Odion Ighalo who emerged the highest goal scorer in the qualifiers of the Africa Cup of Nations and Al-Nassr attacker, Ahmed Musa.

According to the Nigerian Football Federation, about 150 journalists were chosen across the country to vote through an electronic system.

The nominations for this year’s award -the second edition was from performances from the date of the last year’s awards in February 2018 till the last 2019 Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier.

The trio have been in good form for both club and country under the year in review.

Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega and Onome Ebi who were part of the Super Falcons that clinched the 2018 Afruca Women’s Cup of Nations will battle for the gong in the women’s category.

Musa’s second strike against Iceland, Ighalo’s third goal againsts Libya and Kelvin Itoya’s rocket againts Kano Pillars have been shortlisted for the Goal of the season.

Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze, Sporting Charleroi’s Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray’s Henry Onyekuru are in contention for the Young Player of the Year Male, while Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie and Anam Imo are on the Women’s list.

For the women’s coach of the year, Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby, Bayelsa Queens’ Moses Aduku and Wemimo Matthew of Sunshine Queens have been nominated while Gernot Rohr, Solomon Ogbeide of Lobi Stars and Rangers Gbenga Ogunbote are nominees in the men’s category.
