Nigeria vs Iceland: Eagles must switch to 3-5-2 – Finidi

Former Super Eagles winger, George Finidi has urged German tactician Gernot Rohr to ditch the 4-2-3-1 formation applied in the defeat to Croatia and adopt a more effective 3-5-2 approach for the next game against Iceland on Friday.

Newly signed Stoke City midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo turned in a Mario Mandzukic header past Francis Uzoho in the first half before Real Madrid star, Luka Modric made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

Finidi who played for Nigeria at the 94’ and 98’ World Cups believes that the team were restricted by the formation of the manager and a change in tactics will see them improve.

“We committed two defensive errors and that cost us the match (against Croatia),” Finidi told SportingLife in an exclusive chat.

“The team did not play to its strength. Some players did not feel comfortable with their role. We did not know when and where to make pressing.

“The coaching crew have to do a better job next game. The attack did not function because our midfield was not there yesterday.

“I think we have to use our wings to really have a chance. Playing through the middle would be difficult. We need players that can play 1v1. Iceland can defend very well.

“We play a 1-3-5-2 formation where you let their defenders to be occupied by our 2 strikers thereby creating the 1v1 at the wings.”

Nigeria are currently bottom in Group D and will hope to pick their first points on June 22 when they battle debutants Iceland at Volgograd Arena in Russia.
