Niko Kovac wants a tougher and faster Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are often thought of as the Rolls Royce of German football, but manager Niko Kovac reckons he’s working with an old banger judging by his latest comments.

The Bayern boss saw his side labour to a 2-1 win over struggling Union Berlin on Saturday, and they still trail Borussia Monchengladach in the Bundesliga by a point.

A lot has been written about the German champions’ aging squad and Kovac appeared to concur that his side are due an upgrade or two

He was questioned on his team’s mentality and why they cannot inject the same intensity into their performances that the likes of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool do

Bayern Munich need to increase the tempo

‘You need the right players for that,’ he explained in his press conference following their cagey win over Union Berlin.

‘You can’t drive at a speed of 200kmph on the Autobahn with a car that has the maximum of 100kmph.’

Kovac is under pressure in Munich after taking on the club’s old guard this season.

He has essentially deemed Thomas Muller a bit-part player, something that has not gone down well with neither supporters nor team-mates.
