Obagoal eyes first victory on Shanghai Shenhua return

Nigeria international Obafemi Martins will be hoping to sing his first Shanghai Shenhua return victory song on Thursday as the Choi Kang-Hee tutored side host Shenzhen.

Martins who made a second return to Chinese Super League recently was in action for 26 minutes in the club’s post Covid-19 opener against eight time League champions Guangzhou Evergrande on Saturday which ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Martins stepped in at replacement for homeboy Yang Xu in the 64th minute with the homers grabbing their second goal just two minutes after he came on.  Guangzhou Evergrande had shot into the lead in the 7th minute through Wei Shihao who made it a brace in the 66th minute.

But Thursday will provide ample opportunity for Martins and his teammates to earn the first three points as they host visiting Shenzhen.

Recall that the league was originally set to start on February 22 but was postponed indefinitely because of the spread of the coronavirus, which first emerged in China.

Sixteen teams have been divided into two groups to play without spectators in hubs at Dalian and Suzhou, near Shanghai, for a 14-round first phase of the league until September 28.

All players and staff are subjected to COVID-19 tests at airports on their arrival, and the tests will be conducted every week.
