Okereke: Olympic Eagles will avenge Flying Eagles loss to Sudan

Olympic Eagles attacker, David Okereke has asserted that they won’t underrate Sudan Under 23 team in the final round of the qualifiers for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Egypt in November this year after both teams emerged as opponents again at the end of the last qualifiers.

Nigerian U23 team came back from a 2-0 deficit to advance to the next round on 4-2 aggregate after whitewashing Libya 4-0 in the reverse fixture played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Monday while Sudan completed the final round fixture on Tuesday afternoon after they held Kenya to a goalless draw in Nairobi to book a passage to the final round 2-0 on aggregate from the 2-0 win they had in Omdurman in
the first leg.

Ahead of the double-header in June, FC Spezia forward who scored the fourth goal of the encounter to add gloss to the result after Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick told SportingLife in Asaba that they are not going to take the Sudanese opposition for granted in both legs and that they are poised to avenge the loss to the 2017 class of the Flying Eagles under Emmanuel Amuneke to the same team during the 2017 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers which denied Nigeria a place at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup.

“We knew that the game was very important for us after the first leg result,” Okereke told SportingLife.

“We didn’t have time to prepare very well for the game in Tunisia but the loss to Libya in the first leg helped us to get back to work almost immediately after our return from Ben Guerdane. Everybody was angry to get the job done as soon as the game started in Asaba and we placed our anger on our opponents and got the desired result. He just told me to go do what I know how to do.
“Actually with the way the first leg went, we knew it was not going tombe an easy game but at home, we decided to be patient because we knew that the goals will definitely come. We just worked on one goal before the other. We knew that if they are under pressure we would get the goals we wished and it was what we did.

“We know that it is important not to underrate any team. We just have to be well prepared for the next game. Whoever that comes through to this stage won’t be a pushover. We just have to prepare very well and try to revenge for the loss of the Under 20 team.”
Okereke has been in awesome form for his Italian Serie B side Spezia whom he has scored eight goals and created assists for another eight goals from the 26 games he has featured for the team this season out of 28.
