Ozil’s ghost still haunts Arteta at Emirates

Mesut Ozil has departed Arsenal for Fenerbahce but his ghost still moving around the Emirates to haunt Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta’s comment suggests Ozil problem may still be present at Arsenal

Arteta couldn’t rule out having another Mesut Ozil problem on his hands at Arsenal when asked if he’ll freeze out any high profile stars.

Arteta sparked controversy when leaving Ozil out of his Premier League and Europa League sides at the start of the season, despite the midfielder’s apparent worth to the club.

Having played no football this season, Ozil opted to leave Arsenal this January, terminating his contract in north London and signing for Fenerbahce.

Arteta isn’t expecting much transfer activity this deadline day but is hoping to shift a few players who have no future at the club.

“The last day of the window is always unpredictable, things can happen,” admitted Arteta. “It might happen, it might not happen. We are on it.”

When asked if he could have another Ozil situation on his hands if he fails to shift the deadwood before the window slams shut, he responded: “Hopefully not!”

One high-profile player in danger of being frozen out at Arsenal is Shkodran Mustafi.

The centre-back, who is out of contract at the end of the season, hasn’t kicked a ball for the Gunners since December and was recently linked with a move to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are desperate to sign a center-back this window and were looking at the German as a temporary option until Virgil van Dijk and co. are fit again.

But Liverpool have since turned their attention to Preston’s Ben Davies, and have agreed on a transfer in the region of £1.6million for the centre-back.
