Pep insists ‘nothing changes’ in title race despite dominant win

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted nothing has changed in the title race despite heaping the pressure on Liverpool with a dominant win over Watford.

Gabriel Jesus scored four and Rodri added another as City marched to an easy victory at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon.

The result moves four points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table. Jurgen Klopp’s side face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday as they aim to keep the pressure on City.

Speaking after the game, City boss Guardiola claimed his side weren’t good enough defensively but were helped through by their attacking talent.

“We started well from the first minute of the first half and second half. We didn’t defend well, we were not aggressive enough. But the players up front, not just Gabriel for his incredible four goals, but all of them were brilliant.”

On Jesus, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Guardiola praised the Brazilian’s performance.

“If there’s one person who deserves the best in life for him, his family and his friends, it’s Gabriel.

“All of us at the club, when he has one of these situations, we’re happy for him because he’s so generous. It doesn’t matter what position he’s going to play, we know how he fights for his mates. He’s fantastic.”

And despite the dominant win, Guardiola insisted his side must still win all five of their remaining games to secure the Premier League title.

“Nothing changes. When we won against Brighton we were two points behind [before the game], now we’re four in front. Brighton was a ‘final’. We had another ‘final’ today and we won it. Now we have an opportunity to play a ‘final’ against Leeds.

“Nothing changes. We have to win all five games to be champions.”
