Pep ‘leads’ Pochettino in head-to-heads amid UCL unfinished business

Mauricio Pochettino has only won three matches against Pep Guardiola in the 19 times they have faced each other. But the Argentine triumphed in a Champions League knock-out match which still stings City fans to this day.

Pep has managed eleven victories against the PSG manager. The most bitter of these came in 2019, in the return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. In that campaign, Tottenham arrived at the Etihad with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

The decisive clash was a crazy affair. Within just eleven minutes, the scoreline read 2-2 thanks to a brace from Son and goals from Sterling and Silva for the home side. But City reacted well and made it 4-2 thanks to Aguero and another from Sterling in the second half.

However, Llorente rained on Pep’s parade, ruining his hopes of a comeback with a definitive goal to make it 4-3, allowing Tottenham to proceed to the semi-finals on away goals. In the 93rd minute, Sterling thought he had put his side into the semis, but VAR disallowed the goal.

The stats show Guardiola to be the clear winner against Pochettino, during the eleven derbies between Barca and Espanyol before their eight encounters in the Premier League. The Argentine only won once in Spain, with a 1-2 victory at the Camp Nou thanks to a brace from De la Peña. His other two victories: a 2-0 win in their first Premier League encounter and the aforementioned 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals 2018/19.
