Paul Pogba looked absolutely delighted to be away from the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United as he reported for international duty with France on Monday.

The midfielder, wearing gold earrings and a woolly hat with ‘Supreme’ emblazoned on it, smiled and gave the thumbs up for the cameras as he checked in at the national team’s Clairefontaine base.

The world champions have a friendly match against Iceland in Guingamp on Thursday evening before continuing their UEFA Nations League campaign against Germany at Stade de France in Paris next Tuesday.

It means Pogba will be away from the United camp for around 10 days – a prospect he seems to be relishing.

Tensions between Pogba and United manager Jose Mourinho have been worsening over recent weeks amid the backdrop of United’s terrible start to the season.

Pogba, who returned to Old Trafford in a then world record £89million transfer from Juventus in 2016, wants to leave United and join Barcelona following his fall-out with Mourinho.

United are adamant Pogba will not be sold in the January transfer window whether Mourinho remains in his job or not.

Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola was planning to speak to United next month about the prospect of a sale, however, speaking to Italian radio, Raiola said: ‘I prefer not to talk about [Pogba]. It’s a very delicate moment and we all know that, but Manchester United have been very clear with everybody: Pogba is not on the market.’

United’s thrilling comeback to beat Newcastle United 3-2 on Saturday had alleviated the immediate pressure on Mourinho but he will need to use the result as a turning point.

Dauntingly, United travel to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea in their next Premier League fixture after the international break and then play Juventus twice in quick succession in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, France’s 19-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe arrived in a happy mood after scoring four times in Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-0 drubbing of Lyon on Sunday night.

Mbappe has scored 10 goals and contributed four assists for PSG during a storming start to the season, with the reigning champions already eight points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

France are in a strong position in their Nations League group having drawn 0-0 away to Germany and defeated Holland 2-1 in their opening two fixtures last month.
