Pomp, pageantry as Tinubu, Elegushi, others become NOC Patrons

The palatial venue coupled with the crème-de-la-crème that graced the investiture of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; His Royal Majesty Oba Saheed Elegushi; Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan; Sir Mark Wabara and Chief Mrs. Kofoworola Nwokedi as patrons of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) showed the significance of the event.

Aside the elegant look of the venue – Oba S.A. Elegushi’s Palace in Lekki, Victoria Island, the event attracted Olympians and Paralympians who have brought glory and honour to Nigeria and it was an occasion that also confirmed the significant role sports has played in unifying the country.

In his goodwill message, the President of NOC, Engr. Habu Gumel described the selected patrons as worthy Nigerians whose contributions to the society and sports cannot be underestimated.

“This investiture of patrons is the first of its kind in the annals of the Olympic Movement in Nigeria. We are here today to induct into the high office of NOC Patron some iconic individuals whose meritorious contributions to humanity, sports and societal development speak volumes. Moving beyond their moral uprightness and
unfettered integrity, the responsibility and expectation of patrons of NOC is to advise and support the body movement in the discharge of its mandate,” Gumel said.

He congratulated the patrons on their appointment and subsequent acceptance to serve, while lauding the paramount ruler of Elegushi Kingdom for hosting the colourful event in his palace.

For Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the honoured attested the significance roles Lagos State has been playing in Nigerian sports, while pledging support to the Olympic family.

Tinubu, who was represented by the former Deputy Governor of Lagos, Femi Pedro, believes that Lagos would continue to be a pacesetter in sports while he assured of his commitment to youth development through sports.

The chief host – Oba Saheed Elegushi however promised to continue supporting youth development through sports, adding that sports remains the only unifying factor that bring Nigerians together regardless of their background.

The investiture train moves to Abuja on November 8 where five notable individuals will also be honoured as patrons.
