Premier League: PFA Awards off amid coronavirus crisis

The PFA Awards have been postponed because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus outbreak.

The ceremony was due to take place in London on Thursday with two inductees into the Premier League’s inaugural Hall of Fame on the agenda.

Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry were among the favourites for the award.

But the ceremony has been called off with Premier League bosses set to meet with clubs earlier that day for crisis talks.

All Premier League games have been postponed until April 4 at the earliest because of the pandemic but this date is likely to be put back even further.

The League will decide whether it should still announce its two inductees this week.

But it is more likely that the winner of the Hall of Fame could now be put on hold until the virus subsides.

In more pressing matters it is still not known if the Premier League season will even be completed.

Liverpool are potentially just a couple of wins away from claiming a first league title in 30 years but could end up not lifting the trophy.

Premier League rules may deem this campaign null and void if no more matches are played, meaning all the Reds’ hard work will have been for nothing.

There is still a lot of discussion and debate to come, of course, about the situation, but the pandemic could continue for months according to experts.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was the first person based in the Premier League to be tested positive for coronavirus late last week.

Chelsea midfielder Callum Hudson-Odoi has also tested positive, with a host of other players in self-isolation and training grounds shut down as a precaution.

There are currently more pressing matters to be dealt with than the PFA Awards.
