Niger United and Safety Babes have emerged champions of the first phase of the Prudent Energy Premier Basketball League, which ended in Abuja on Sunday.

Niger United won nine games, drew one and lost one to amass 19 points to lead the men’s category while Safety Babes won eight matches and lost one to amass 16 points to the lead women’s category.

Also in the men’s category, Kada Stars (18 points) finished second, Safety Shooters (17 points) ended in third place, Lagos Seasiders (16 points) finished fourth, Civil Defenders (16 points) were fifth, Kano Pillars (14 points) were sixth, Platueau Vipers (11 points) finished in seventh place, COAS Shooters (8 points) finished eight, Rima Striker (six points) finished ninth, Owena Kings (5 points) finished 10th, Borno Spiders (two points) ended 11th, while Prison Key Boys, who lost all their games finished last.

In the Women’s event, Seasider Babes (14 points) finished second, Imo Grasshoppers (14 points) were third, Plateau Peacocks (14 points) finished fourth, Defender Babes (10 points) were 5th, Edo Dynamos (10 points) finished in 6th place, Kada Queens (6 points) were 7th, Abia Valiants (4 points) placed eight, Owena Queens with two points were ninth, while Desert Queens ended last with no points.

Twenty two teams played a total of 111 games in the 10-day event with the second phase slated for October in Lagos.

President of the HFN, Sam Ocheho commended the teams for putting up good performances in the championship and advised them to continue to do well, while promising that the HFN board would continue to organise programmes that would enhance their career.
