Rashford sets goalscoring target for Man Utd

Marcus Rashford is targeting his best season for Manchester United in front of the goal.

Rashford bagged his 18th goal of the campaign in the 3-1 win over Newcastle and needs just five more to eclipse his best haul for United of 22 last season.

“Yeah, definitely,” said the United striker. “Year on year, you try and kick on, just improve on the last year. It’s something I don’t put too much emphasis on, if it happens I’ll be happy.

“The most important thing was getting the result and now it’s about recovering and getting ready for the next Europa League game.”

Rashford was delighted to see teenage striker Shola Shoretire replace him to make his senior debut, just three weeks after his 17th birthday.

Shoretire hopes to emulate Rashford’s success and the England hitman says the academy players are inspired by those who make it to the first team.

“He’s even younger than I was!” said Rashford. “It was a terrific moment. I think when the young players do make their debuts, they kick on from that so hopefully we will see him out on the pitch many more times.

“He’s a player who has a lot of qualities and the more often he trains and plays with us, the more relaxed he will be and able to show his quality on the pitch.

“In the academy, they always emphasise following in someone’s footsteps. It’s something I acknowledged, wanting to get in the first team, wanting to follow in the footsteps of other academy players who had made the step up.

“It’s just a cycle and the younger ones will see him playing and they will kick on and we get more of them in the team.”
