Real Madrid boss Zidane gives latest update on Hazard ankle injury

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane says he does not think Eden Hazard needs an operation on his ankle and hopes the Belgian attacker will be back in action soon.

Hazard was helped off in considerable pain after he was hurt in a challenge by international team-mate Thomas Meunier during Los Blancos’ 2-2 Champions League draw at home to Paris Saint-Germain on November 26.

Madrid initially said that the former Chelsea midfielder had only bruising, but further tests last week revealed a small fracture and the 28-year-old is now expected to be sidelined until January.

Asked on Monday if surgery was needed to fix the problem, ZIdane said: “I don’t think he has to be operated on, but I don’t know exactly.

“What I can tell you is that the injury is under control. I hope it is less time than what is foreseen, because people are speaking about a week, or two, and now the important thing is to be patient because it’s not a good moment for him, nor for us.

“I hope he returns soon.”

Hazard misses Madrid’s trip to Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday night and is expected to play no part in any of their remaining fixtures in 2019, which include a visit to Valencia in La Liga on Sunday and the Clasico against Barcelona at Camp Nou next week.
