Real Madrid bounce back to hit Shakhtar 5-0

Real Madrid were at their Braziliant best in Kiev with Vinicius and Rodrygo destroying Shakhtar Donetsk.

Vini Junior scored twice and Rodrygo once as Carlo Ancelotti’s side put their defeat by Sheriff behind them with a 5-0 win that will give them a huge confidence boost before Sunday’s Clasico.

There were eight players from Brazil in Shakhtar Donetsk’s starting line-up but it was their compatriots wearing white who stole the show.

Vinicius’ second goal was the pick of the four. Two stepovers got him past Dodo, then a drop of the shoulder saw him swerve past Serhiy Krivtsov and finally a shot high into the roof of the net beat Anatolii Trubin.

The home side had helped Real Madrid out with the first two goals but Vinicius had needed no assistance with that brilliant third.

Madrid had endured a frustrating first half with long distance shots pelted from all angles at Trubin who kept Madrid at bay until he was beaten by his own defender on 37 minutes.

Lucas Vazquez whipped in a cross from the right and with Karim Benzema breathing down his orange Shakhtar shirt Krivtsov tried to clear but hacked the ball past his own helpless keeper.

It was no more than Madrid deserved after dominating the first period. Benzema led the charge with a shot just wide inside three minutes. A minute later Toni Kroos had gone one better with a long shot that Trubin had to push away. Vinicius also had an early shot and that too was turned away by Trubin.

So anxious were Madrid to take an early lead that Manor Soloman managed to run in behind their defence and Thibaut Courtois had to race out and thump clear.

Casemiro was next to go close for Madrid winning a corner when his shot deflected wide. Trubin then had to push a Kroos shot away. But just as it appeared he was taking a clean sheet down the tunnel at the break Lucas’ cross was turned in.

The second half started painfully for Casemiro when substitute Marcos Antonio stamped down on his ankle and was booked. He was soon celebrating with the rest of the team as Madrid went 2-0 up on 51 minutes.

Just as with the first Real Madrid goal, Shakhtar helped them out. They had the throw midway inside their own half but Benzema nicked it as it bounced and crossed to Modric whose deft pass played in Vinicius. Dodo was playing him onside and he clipped the ball over Trubin to double the advantage.

Vinicius got the third and on 65 minutes it was four as Rodrygo joined Vinicius on the scoresheet. Benzema – the source of so much of Madrid’s best play – played the ball to Vinicius who pulled it back to his compatriot and he scored high into the net.

Madrid still needed Courtois to keep the home side out. He saved well from Fernando and Marlos Romero.
