Real Madrid close in €100m from Champions League campaign

Real Madrid’s season continues to go from strength to strength.

And that’s not only to the delight of their fans, but also the club’s accountants.

With Los Blancos getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League – an outcome many wouldn’t have predicted after their poor start to the campaign – they now stand to potentially make as much as 100 million euros in revenue from the competition.

The group stages netted them 56.2 million euros, and they could stand to make a further 40 million euros from TV and other commercial avenues.

Real Madrid should also stand to gain more from being the last Spanish team left in the competition, but the exact figure won’t be known until the winners are crowned.

What’s clear is that this money is coming into the club’s coffers at just the right time, given the huge hole left by the lack of fans coming to games.

Including the upcoming visit of Chelsea, Los Merengues will have played six games at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in the Champions League this term, with no gate receipts.

If Zinedine Zidane and his charges make it to the final of the competition, they will land 15 million euros, with the winner of that game taking home a further 19 million euros.

In 2019, Barcelona – as a result of the competition’s ‘market pool’ pot split – made 117 million euros from the competition, despite only reaching the semi-finals.

The winners of the 2020 edition – Bayern Munich – made 83 million euros last year, a reduced figure due to playing fewer matches as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
