Revealed! Why Khune started for Kaizer Chiefs ahead of Akpeyi

Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune made a surprise return to the pitch at the weekend ahead of Daniel Akpeyi, and the reasons therefore may have been revealed.

Khune started Chiefs’ 2-2 draw away to Golden Arrows at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday as they finally broke their scoring drought in the DStv Premiership.

The Bafana Bafana shot-stopper, who was part of Molefi Ntseki’s recent camp to face Sao Tome and Principe, came in ahead of Akpeyi, who had also been on international duty with Nigeria.

With the Super Eagles star having established himself as Amakhosi’s number-one in recent times, it may have come as a surprise to some as ‘Itu’ was back between the sticks despite his teammate’s availability.

However, coach Gavin Hunt dropped a hint prior to the Durban trip that Akpeyi’s travel itinerary hampered his preparation time and ultimately may have led to his sitting on the bench.

“The travelling players faced an assortment of traveling patterns. For example, Daniel Akpeyi arrived in the early hours [on Friday] and I had to send him back home to rest,” explained Hunt.

With Chiefs set to face top flight rookies Swallows FC at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday evening, the four-time league winning tactician may well hand the gloves back to the 34-year-old former Chippa United goalkeeper.
