Rivers Angels retain Aiteo Cup

Rivers Angels have won the 2018 Aiteo Women’s Cup for the third consecutive year after dispatching perennial rivals Ibom Angels by a lone goal in the final played at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State on Tuesday.

Juliet Sunday emerged the match winner, as she scored in the 47th minute to give Rivers their eighth title in nine years and pocket the N10m prize money, while the runners up received N5m.

Rivers proved a handful for their opponents and should have taken the lead through Vivian Ikechukwu in the 14th minute.  Two minutes later Rofiat Sule thought she had scored to the delight of fans and players. only for the centre referee to rule for offside after consulting with her assistant.

The referee was again called to duty in the 36th minute when the effort of Ibom Angels Glory Edet’s came off the woodwork with teammate Emem Essen converting home the rebound. There was brief jubilation in the camp of Ibom Angels which stopped when they saw the flag of the assistant referee raised to signal for offside.

Edet proved a thorn in the flesh for the Rivers defenders and should have leveled scores in the 57th minute, but was denied by goalkeeper and Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Tuesday’s final was a repeat of last year’s edition which was played in Jos with Rivers Angels winning via penalties.

The match was watched by the Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson and Falcons head coach Thomas Dennerby who was there to monitor five of the 48 players invited to the team’s camp ahead of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations scheduled for next month in Ghana.
