Rivers Angels set the ball rolling at Betsy Obaseki Women football event

Rivers Angels FC began their Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win over Fortress Ladies FC inside the UNIBEN Sports Complex on Monday.

Ifeoma Polinus scored from close range in the 20th minute to put the Jewel Of Rivers in front and in the 26th minute, Evelyn Nwabuoku converted from the spot after a penalty was awarded to the team following a foul on Maryann Ezenagu.

In the 54th minute, Berita Kabwe made an instant impact barely 60 seconds after coming off the bench to increase the tally from a goalmouth scramble.

Another substitute, Cecilia Nku rounded off the scoring with a strike in stoppage time to make it 4-0.

After the game, Head Coach Edwin Okon admitted his side were not even at their best but got the desired result.

“For now, play badly and win but thank God we won at the end of the day. As you can see, we’re still trying out a couple of our new signings before the bigger event,” he stated.

“This tournament is simply a build up for us and as it progresses, we’ll keep blending the squad. We made random changes today, both young and older players.

“Tomorrow’s game is against Royal Queens and I’m hoping we do better than we did today but there’s no pressure at all”, Okon added.

Rivers Angels will next play Royal Queens on Tuesday by 1pm at the UNIBEN Sports Complex.
