Ex-Nigeria international Austin Okocha has said the formation of Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr deployed against Croatia in her opening match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia led to its defeat.

The former Super Eagles captain who was a guest analyst on SuperSport also blamed the Coach for playing his best players out of their positions which the Europeans capitalised on.

“The manager did not earn his money today. We were no threats to Croatia who are very good at taking advantage of their opponents mistakes which we saw them do. “It is sad because I know we can do better than this. If we have to qualify, it has be through the hard way.

“There was no a creative player today,”  The coach made a mistake by playing Mikel in the creative role. He is better playing in front of the defence which we saw him do in Chelsea. It did not help Moses and Iwobi on the flanks.”

“The most creative player in that team was Alex Iwobi but he was played on the flanks. He (Iwobi) can play on the flanks at Arsenal because they have better players in that role like Mesut Ozil, ” said the player who featured for Nigeria at three FIFA World Cups in 1994, 1998 and 2002.

An own goal from Oghenekaro Eteno and a penalty from Luka Modric gave Croatia the three points to top group D while the loss extended Nigeria’s winless streak in opening World Cup matches to four.
