Roma: ‘Ban on training incomprehensible’

Roma’s chief medic finds the limit on football training until May 18 to be “incomprehensible” and damaging compared to other sports. “It’s almost as if they don’t trust us.”

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte outlined Phase Two of the coronavirus pandemic response from May 4, which includes the ability to go running in a local park or train if you take part in individual sports such as tennis, but team sports cannot return to work until May 18.

“The latest decree took us by surprise,” Roma chief medic Andrea Causarano told news agency ANSA.

“It’s astonishing how football is treated compared to other sports. It’s almost as if they don’t trust us to resume while respecting the safety measures…

“It’s incomprehensible not to consider football in a moment when the objective is to allow a gradual resumption of sporting activity. We were all set to get back to work in our training ground behind closed doors, keeping social distancing measures and without gathering in groups.”
