It will be the second accolade for the player in the tournament after the Spain game where he banged a hat-trick .

The 33-year-old striker now has four goals from two matches.

Ronaldo’s 85th goal for Portugal made him Europe’s all-time leading international goalscorer as he broke Hungary legend Ferens Puskas’s 62-year-old record.

Ronaldo also scored all three goals for Portugal in their opening 3-3 draw against Spain and is the early front-runner for the Golden Boot award for most goals at the World Cup.

Reigning European champions Spain will next play Iran in Saransk later in the evening.
