Ronaldo ‘proud’ after shaking off Salah to win POTM

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Premier League Player of the Month award for September, meaning he has won the trophy at the first time of asking since his return to England.

Ronaldo was one of six players up for the award with he general consensus that he and Mohamed Salah were the favourites. Both players scored three goals in three games, however, Salah’s Liverpool team came out with the greater points return.

Ronaldo’s international team-mate and Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo was also up for the award as was Chelsea centre-half Antonio Rudiger. Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin and Watford winger Ismaila Sarr rounded out the competition.

However, it was the Portuguese forward who took the victory, his first Premier League Player of the Month award since March 2008. This is his fifth award in total.

The player has since took to Twitter to thank his new teammates for their help in securing the award.

“Proud to be elected Player of the Month among so many great players in the Premier League,” said the 36-year-old.

“Thanks to all my teammates at Man United, couldn’t have done it without them. Let’s keep working hard and the results will come!”

Despite Ronaldo’s personal form, the team has struggled for results, dropping points against the likes of Everton and Aston Villa in recent weeks as well as losing at Young Boys in the Champions League.
