Ronaldo set for free-kick ban after ‘unforgivable’ behaviour for Juve

Andrea Pirlo has admitted he may be forced to take Cristiano Ronaldo out of Juventus’ free-kick walls, after he cost the Italian giants yet again.

During Juventus’ 3-1 win over Parma in midweek, the visitors took a shock lead when Gaston Brugman curled an inch perfect set-piece past Gianluigi Buffon.

However, upon closer inspection, it was clear to see that Ronaldo appeared to duck out of the way of the ball.

The error comes just six weeks after the Portuguese legend came under-fire for doing the same thing during their dramatic Champions League exit to FC Porto.

On that occasion, Sergio Oliveira’s strike from distance found the bottom corner after Ronaldo appeared to shirk away from the strike.

Former Juve boss Fabio Capello was highly critical of the forward in the post-match analysis, labelling the moment as ‘unforgivable’.

“That was an unforgivable error. In my day, you chose the players who went into the wall and they couldn’t be someone afraid of the ball,” he said last after the Porto clash.

“They were scared of the ball and jumped away from it, turning their backs. That’s unforgivable.”

And after the latest gaffe, Pirlo has claimed that he will have to decide whether to bring him out of the wall altogether.

“Unfortunately, these things happen,” Pirlo said in regards to Ronaldo’s attempt to block the ball.

“But we’ll evaluate (his role at free-kicks) over the next few days.”

The mistake brings more spotlight onto Juventus’ decision to sign the 36-year-old in the first place.

The Old Lady forked out over £99m to lure him away from Real Madrid in 2018, hoping he would be the final piece in their Champions League jigsaw.

Despite his arrival however, Juventus are yet to make it beyond the quarter finals, losing to Ajax, Lyon and Porto in the last three years.

Bianconeri chief Andrea Agnelli has said that his commerical value has meant that there are no regrets about bringing him to Turin.

“Wrong to take Ronaldo? Never,” Agneill told Corriere dello Sport.

“I would do it again tomorrow. And Pirlo too. Stability allows us to follow the path of growth by investing in young players and coaches even at their first experience.”

He added: “We brought Cristiano to Italy and his presence alone has guaranteed the other clubs €4 million at the box office.

“We wish to continue importing other champions with the benefits for all levels of football, from the youngsters to the amateurs.”
