Salah will set new record if he wins golden boot

Mohamed Salah heads into the final game of the Premier League season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the brink of making Liverpool history.

The Egyptian leads the race for the Golden Boot with 22 goals – two ahead of Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and teammate Sadio Mane.

Should he still have the most goals after Sunday’s Anfield clash, he will become the first Liverpool player ever to be the top flight’s outright leading scorer in successive seasons.

Liverpool are two goals short of recording 150 league goals against Wolves, with this being the 96th league meeting.

In nine Premier League meetings with Wolves, the Reds have won six and drawn two, with a single defeat. Those encounters have produced 17 goals with 14 coming from Liverpool.

Since returning to the top flight in 1962, LFC have played their final league game of the season at Anfield on 22 occasions. The Reds have won 14 and lost just twice – in 1967 against Blackpool and at the hands of Arsenal in 1989.

In the Premier League era they have won 10 and drawn two with no defeats.

In the previous two seasons, Liverpool had to beat Middlesbrough and Brighton and Hove Albion on the final day to secure a Champions League place.

A crowd of at least 52,170 at the 54,074-capacity Anfield on Sunday will see Liverpool record their highest-ever average home league attendance in a campaign, beating the 53,113 set two seasons ago.

They could also set a club record for the highest aggregate attendance in a single season at Anfield, beating the 1,010,170 who watched them in 1972-73 if the crowd today reaches 53,185.

Virgil van Dijk could become the first outfield player since Martin Skrtel in 2010-11 to play for the Reds in every match of a Premier League campaign. Alisson Becker could also be a league ever-present in his first season at Anfield.

Alisson could play his 50th game for Liverpool in all competitions. He has kept five clean sheets in his last eight matches and three in his last four in the top flight.

A clean sheet for him in this encounter will see him keep 21 for the league campaign – the most by any Reds goalkeeper since Ray Clemence (28 in 1978-79).

If he prevents Wolves from scoring he will be guaranteed to finish as joint-winner of the Golden Glove at the very least. He and Manchester City’s Ederson have both kept 20 shutouts.

In the last 27 league clashes, Liverpool have prevented Wolves from scoring on 16 occasions.

Divock Origi has scored for the Reds in both of his appearances against Wolves. He has scored three goals in his last two outings (110 minutes of action).

One goal today will see Liverpool record their highest tally of goals in a home league campaign since 1985-86 when they scored 58 in 21 matches. They currently have 53 in 18 Anfield games.

If the Reds concede fewer than three goals against Wolves they will record their best defensive record in the Premier League era. They have shipped 22 this season. They conceded 25 in 2005-06. The record is 16 in that 1978-79 season.

Liverpool could go unbeaten at home for a second successive league season for the first time since 1979-80.

The Reds have already earned more points this season than 111 of the previous 119 league champions. Should they win today, they will increase that number to 116.

Wolves are the last domestic team to beat the Reds this season – in a third-round FA Cup tie in January. Since then, in all competitions, the Reds have lost just one of the last 22 – at Barcelona.

In encounters with the Premier League top six this season, Wolves have taken 16 points from 11 games, winning four, drawing four and losing three.
