Sanchez is latest former Gunner to join Olympique Marseille

Alexis Sanchez is set to sign for Olympique Marseille after terminating his contract with Inter Milan.

The former Arsenal forward still has a year left on his Inter deal but last week it was reported that he had ripped up his contract after being informed that he was no longer part of Simone Inzaghi’s plans.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 33-year-old is now set to move to the Ligue 1 side on a two-year deal, where he will be able to link up with no less than three other ex-Gunners, namely Matteo Guendouzi, Sead Kolasinac, and Nuno Tavares, while William Saliba also spent last season on loan at the Stade Velodrome.

Full-back Tavares is spending this campaign on loan at Marseille and got off to the best possible start for his new club on Sunday, scoring a stunning solo goal on his debut in a 4-1 win over Reims.

Coincidentally, it was fellow Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun who came off the bench to score the Reims goal.

Sanchez is somewhat of an Arsenal icon, having joined the club from Barcelona in 2014 and going onto score 80 goals and make 45 assists in 166 games, winning two FA Cups in the process.

However, his time at the Emirates came to a bitter end in January 2018, with the Chilean forcing his way out of the club and moving to Manchester United in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But his time at Old Trafford was a complete nightmare, scoring just five goals in 45 games, with Sanchez later admitting that he knew from his very first day at United that he had made a mistake in moving there.

In the summer of 2019 he escaped to Inter, first on loan and then on a free transfer, and while he has never been able to replicate his form from his Arsenal days, he has still made a decent contribution to the side’s Serie A and Coppa Italia triumphs. Sanchez scored 20 goals in 109 appearances in all competitions for Inter.
