Serie A confirms five substitutions in 2021-22

There will be five substitutions per game allowed for each team in the 2021-22 Serie A season, it is confirmed.

The system was introduced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, with matches crammed together and fatigue growing.

It proved popular and the Lega Serie A and FIGC today announced that the rule of five substitutions will continue for the 2021-22 season.

It also means that in competitions that go to extra time, such as the Coppa Italia, a sixth change will be allowed for each team.

Again, there will be three ‘slots’ allowable to make the substitutions, not counting half-time.

That will go up to four slots in extra time.

The IFAB has given the option to maintain this format rather than the traditional three substitutions each until December 31, 2022.

Not all the professional leagues have decided to take them up on the availability, as the Premier League decided to retain just three substitutions per match.
