Serie A: Pirlo says Juve must cut down concentration lapses

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo lamented his players’ lapses in concentration after his side were held to a 2-2 draw by rivals Torino on Saturday in a major blow to their Serie A title hopes.

Pirlo has faced mounting pressure in his job after Juve were eliminated by Porto in the Champions League last-16 and suffered a shock 1-0 league defeat at home to lowly Benevento before the international break.

His team’s performance against Torino did little to silence the critics, as Juve threw away the lead to go behind before Cristiano Ronaldo rescued a point late on.

Torino’s second goal came from a careless backpass from winger Dejan Kulusevski 13 seconds into the second half, which earned comparisons to the mistake the Swede made in a 3-1 win over Lazio on March 6.

“Unfortunately these errors are happening a little too often, where we lose concentration,” Pirlo told DAZN.

“We must understand that we can’t lose focus even for a second. The objective is to stay as focused as possible because every time that you make a mistake, it is only right that you pay for it.”

Juventus, who have won the last nine Serie A titles, are nine points behind leaders Inter Milan in fourth place.

The Turin club are level on 56 points with fifth-placed Napoli, who they face on Wednesday in a game that could see Pirlo’s side drop out of the Champions League qualification spots.

“When you don’t win, you can’t be satisfied. There’s work to do and we’re trying to improve. We must win games, because victories bring calmness,” he said.

“It’s normal that we’re not happy with how the season is going, we’re dropping a lot of points along the way, so we just have to work hard to get better.”
