Shearer: Why Cavani can be so good for Man Utd

Former England captain, Alan Shearer, has no doubts about the value of Edinson Cavani to Manchester United.

At 33, Cavani is the elder statesman of United’s attacking line-up with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood still in the early days of their careers.

And Shearer believes United’s other strikers should be paying close attention to everything Cavani does.

He said, “It’s only going to benefit the likes of Rashford and Greenwood.

“When you look in the dressing room and you see a player of his stature, then you’d be a fool not to follow him closely, both on and off-the-pitch, with his record wherever he’s been, he’s been a success.

“For him to come to a club like this where there’s so much potential, all the youngsters can look up to him and learn.”

Cavani has been most impactful when coming off the bench, though Shearer believes he can have the same influence when starting.

He added: “There’s no reason why not, wherever he’s been, he’s scored goals. He’s a class act. We saw him when he came on against Leicester and he didn’t score but he had a huge impact on the game and set Bruno Fernandes up.

“We saw him again coming on at half-time against Southampton, scoring two and assisting. He’s a quality player, he can assist and he can score goals.”
