Simon’s goal fails to save Nantes from defeat against Rennes

Super Eagles winger Moses Simon was among the goalscorers in Nantes’s 3-2 defeat to Rennes in Friday’s Ligue 1 showdown.

The Nigerian international was one of the stand-out performers on the night against ‎Julien Stephan’s men, netting his third league goal in the French topflight this campaign.

Despite an action-packed first-half, both sides failed to find the back of the net before the break, with the Canaries failing to convert from several set pieces that came their way.

Damien Da Silva, however, broke the deadlock in the 47th minute after turning the ball into his own net to give the visitors the lead.

Raphinha levelled for the Red and Blacks before Simon restored the lead for his side after he was set up by Imran Louza’s assist.

Rennes rallied back through late efforts from Benjamin Bourigeau and Raphinha to snatch all three points at Roazhon Park.

Moses was on parade for the entire duration of the game alongside Senegal duo of Mbaye Niang and Edouard Mendy, who ended on the winning side while Angola’s Eduardo Camavinga was replaced in the 83rd minute.

The defeat on the night leaves Nantes sixth on the Ligue 1 log with 32 points from 22 games.

Moses and Nantes teammate return to action on Tuesday, February 4, with the hope of bouncing back against leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
