Solskjaer reveals link-up between two stars helping Man Utd flourish

Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, outlined how Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes’ instant connection played a part in his side’s huge derby win over Manchester City.

United made it three wins out of four against City this season with a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford, which came courtesy of goals from Martial and Scott McTominay.

Martial’s opener was the result of a well-worked free kick from Fernandes that was chipped over for Martial to volley past Ederson, who should have done more to save it.

In the second half, City were much more dominant but could not find an equaliser and they were finished off by McTominay in the 97th minute when the Scotsman fired excellently into an open net.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Solskjaer said he was delighted with his team’s performance.

Asked what pleased him most about the win, the manager said: “The desire, attitude, commitment, the connection between the fans and players and the team.

“What a day they’ve had today. City made us defend, that’s just the type of team they are. But if our fans can see players with commitment and attitude and desire then we’ve done our job.

“We attacked, pressed them, pushed them back, we were trying to be aggressive with the wing-backs and three up front and we ended up with three at the back,” Solskjaer added.

“So when we hit the press we made them make mistakes and we’re happy with the result.”

Quizzed about whether Martial’s opener was a set-piece his players had worked on in training, Solskjaer revealed that a key factor in the goal was the instant connection between the striker and January arrival Fernandes.

“They’ve hit it off, Anthony and Bruno – Bruno is that type of player. Of course we’ve got set routines but I’ve seen them do it before.”
