Solskjaer to persuade De Gea to stay at United

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he will do his all to persuade David de Gea and Anthony Martial to sign new long-term deals.

The Red Devils automatically extended the contracts of both players through to the end of next season after failing to agree fresh terms.

Following months of drawn-out discussions, neither De Gea or Martial could be persuaded to stay on beyond the end of 2020, potentially forcing United to cash in next summer unless there is a change of mind.

Solskjaer is determined to talk the talented duo into committing their futures to the Old Trafford club, however, telling reporters: “I know the club want them to sign because they are top quality players.

“It’s down to the players but when you’re at Man United there isn’t a lot of greener grass on the other side. You are at the best place. It’s the biggest club in the world.

“For me, I would hope I can help or guide these players to maybe tip them over to thinking they want to stay at this club. If you are a regular at Manchester United, I think you should grasp the opportunity to stay here and become part of the history.”

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is believed to have been lined up as a replacement should De Gea be sold at the end of the season.
