South Africa picks final Olympic ticket beat Ghana 8-7

 

South Africa U-23 side otherwise called the Amaglug-glug picked the last ticket for 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Friday after edging out Ghana in a keenly contested third place match of the U-23 Nations cup in Egypt.

Ghana’s defender Habib Mohammed gave the South Africans the head way after an own goal in the 15th minute of the match but E Mensah equalised for Ghana in the 50th minute.

The Amaglug-glug however regained leadership in the 62nd minute and held tenaciously with indicators that they might seal the victory at 2-1 in regulation time, but Ghana again bounced back in the 85th minute through S. Obeng putting the score line at 2-2.

Victorious South Africa

Both teams battled to finish in the dying minutes of the match with intent to taking the much needed command but to no avails as the tie eventually went straight into penalty shoot-out.

Both teams took eight penalty shots with South African converting six while their Ghanaian counterparts converted five.

The Amaglug-glug became the third African representatives to the next Olympic after the first two tickets have been pocketed by hosts Egypt and Cote d Ivoire who will  later today clash at the Cairo Stadium to determine the Champion of the 2019 U-23 Nations cup.
