Italy’s Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora warns “it is not certain” that the Serie A season will resume even after group training on May 18. “We’re being pressured, but the medical protocol was considered insufficient.”
Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte announced that Phase Two of the coronavirus pandemic response will begin on May 4, with solo sporting activities (swimming, tennis) and the maintenance of social distancing.
“We’ll resume training for team sports from May 18, but only if the conditions of safety and security can be confirmed over the next few weeks,” Minister for Sport Spadafora told Rai programme Che tempo che fa.
In theory, the contact sports would be able to resume on or after June 2, when the country will also allow the opening of salons, barbers and massage parlours.
“I don’t wish to penalise or slow down the resumption of football, but I have to say we’ll see because there need to be rigid and certain protocols in place on the safety of the athletes.
“The FIGC presented a protocol last night and the scientific committee considered it insufficient, so it needs adjustments. Only from that moment, when the protocol is agreed, can we decide whether or not to restart football.
“Many leagues around Europe have terminated their seasons early, but Serie A is not inclined towards suspending the season or even training. We are receiving very strong pressure to resume.
“We realise that the world of football deserves respect and support, as it is one of the largest economic resources in the country.”
Spadafora also warned that if one more player does test positive for COVID-19, it would be game over.

“There are many doubts and the situation is complicated. Nothing is to be taken for granted and it is not certain that the season will resume. We must earn this opportunity with the right behaviour.”
