Spanish FA copies UEFA and scraps away goals in Copa del Rey

The Delgate Commission of the Spanish FA have decided to remove the away goals rule, just like what UEFA did on Thursday.

“UEFA’s rules on breaking ties in two legged matches will automatically apply. Away goals do not count extra as were doing now, such as in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey,” the statement reads.

This decision only affects the semi-finals of the competition as the rest are played over one leg, but the rules apply for all of their competitions, such as promotion play-offs in the third tier downwards. The promotion play-offs in Segunda to get into La Liga are not affected by this ruling as those rules are made by La Liga rather than the RFEF.

“It’s worth noting that these come into effect just a day after UEFA’s Executive Committee approved the proposal and after a long consultation process in the world of football,” the text adds.

Therefore, if a semi-final tie is level on aggregate after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will be played and if they are still level on aggregate, then there will be penalties.
